This year we went for AlpenRoyal, a five star mountain resort with Michelin-star gourmet restaurant. The level of exceptions? High!
We were met by canapes and oysters in the bar/lobby.
Hugo with fresh fruits. Sharp and less sharp second round 🙂
Delicious (and too many) canapees and fresh oysters. Not too bad for a mountain-stay 🙂
Now over to the food. We had something resembling a projector (lamp) hanging over our table. It created a surgery looking light, not optimal for a foodie like me.
The dessert was A M A Z I N G. Soo good.
We went for a local red wine recommended by our waiter: “Sanct Valentin”, a Blauburgunder (Pinot Nero) from St Michel-Eppan, 2013. Nice balance between fruitiness and acid, perfect for the elegant dishes.
This was my second round of lentils and oysters, for photography purposes off course (and I am sure it will have the added benefit of double wealth in 2018) 😉
So, overall, what did we think? It was a nice experience with room for improvement. Ingredient wise, it was all clearly very fresh and of high quality, but the logistics in the kitchen seemed to be under pressure. The dishes arrived unevenly, temperatures were affected, and seasoning was sometimes a little…plain? We got the impression there perhaps were too many guests at one night, thus impacting the quality of the delivery. Given the pricing and Michelin-star, we expected a little more. The welcoming in the reception was on the other hand above our expectations, amazing and delicious canapés and generous coctails in lovely ambience. The place is definitely on our “watch list” as it could be great to come back and try both the hotel and Gourmet restaurant a “normal” evening.
Where we went: AlpenRoyal*****
What we had: New Year’s Meny 300EUR per person, excluding beverages
We agreed to go for a rifugio up in the mountains again next year. Perhaps a second visit to Rifugio Emilio Comici?
