La Leggenda dei Frati, Siena

One of the for sure most memorable lunches we’ve had so far. It was not what we were in the mood for, and not what we expected, but it turned out to be just amazing. We asked our host in Siena for a lunch recommendation as we wanted something authentic, rustic, and simple (like a pizza). He recommended this restaurant, owned by a friend of his, and told us it was “in the higher price range, but totally worth it”. It turned out to be gourmet cuisine, innovative but super crisp with italian roots, and it was just amazing!

We got some sweets to-go, and bought a bottle of wine from the adjacent wine-cellar.

Overall, the prices are in the upper range for Tuscany (I think we spent about €80-100 for one antipasto, two primi, and two glasses of wine). But it is so worth it. And sure, I’m a sucker for gnocchi, but this was just perfection.. the squid was fried just perfectly. One of the best dishes I ever have had! And my love, he loves bread, but again, it was just SO good here. The staff, super friendly and attentive, the dining room had an extremely classic and crisp look, no clutter, just perfect for leaving all attention to the food. We have been back twice, and will go again for sure! La Leggenda di Frati, here at its old location outside Siena, now in Firenze (read more here).
